Gothic house
7th Feb 2008
There was an interesting episode of Grand Designs on Channel 4 last night. The couple building their own house were inspired by Gothic architecture and all things medieval; something along the lines of The Rocky Horror Show and The Adams Family.
I had mixed feelings about the result because of the uneasy juxtaposition of some of their design choices. For instance, the enormous TV sitting next to the amazing hand-carved stone fireplace and the cheap-looking kitchen were both a mistake. However, the amazing staircase, which stretched up through three floors and included hand-carved gargoyles was a complete success. So too were the stained-glass windows.
