screen resolution again

after the recent redesign of A List Apart where the design width is optimised for browser resolutions of 1024 and greater, Jon Hicks poses the question: Is 1024 ok?.
I'm in agreement with Jason Santa Maria (the designer of the site) when he suggests that the readership of A List Apart is largely made up of designers, coders, marketers and writers and therefore are probably already using their web browser at a resolution greater than 800px wide.
