Why audiophiles are dying out

Clive Thomson posts some very interesting thoughts on audiophiles. Audiophiles are people who seek to listen to music at a level of quality as close to the original performance as possible - particularly on expensive sound systems. Apparently how we listen to music these days has spelt the end of this anal breed. He questions the necessity of listening to music that has't been compressed and declares:
A really terrific pop song can survive almost any acoustic mangling and still be delightful. A mediocre one can't.
